Nidderdale Fitness Centre

Upper Nidderdale High School, Pateley Bridge, 2005
Following a limited competition we were commissioned to deliver a swimming pool and fitness facility as an addition to the existing Nidderdale recreation centre. The site is set amongst the tranquil Dales scenery in the market town of Pateley Bridge which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The detailed brief identified the need to deliver an integrated scheme that was sympathetic to the natural surroundings and unified the massing of the existing built form. The overall emphasis on the design approach was an economical construction with simple but strong architectural forms to unify the development both functionally and visually. A distinctive curved element provides a dominant frontage, linking the various activity areas together and breaking down the mass of the existing sports hall. The full length glazing provides visual access to the various activities within the building visually connects the internal spaces and the rich natural surroundings. The floating aerofoil roof to the pool hall expressing minimal supports provides a contemporary contrast to the mass concrete structure which is contextually sympathetic to the site. The new proposal is an integral extension to the existing recreation centre, providing a unified multipurpose facility.
