Sovereign Quay

Havannah Street, Cardiff Bay, 2003
A development of 60 apartments and 1225 square metres of commercial space overlooking the Cardiff docks.
The Sovereign Quay development is the result of a competition conducted by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation. The narrow site running alongside the Graving Dock dictated the footprint of the buildings and the active dockside frontage made ground level space for restaurants, cafes and retail an essential inclusion. Building height was restricted to seven storeys with the tallest section located at the South East end of the site, adjacent to the St Davids hotel. From this point, the building steps down along its length to three storeys at the North West, in a series of five pavilions, each topped by a roof terrace penthouse with a wing roof. All flats enjoy excellent water views, with a curved glass wall for the flats looking out into Cardiff Bay. The apartments are arranged around five cores, which are fully glazed towards the Dock, providing identifiable entrance points. Careful consideration has been given to detail, living rooms address balconies/terraces or have bay windows, bedrooms are shielded form external view and noise. Parking is at half basement level, and a dockside walk forms part of the Scheme.
